Our Neighborhood

Salem has lived for some 121 years near 28th Street and Lyndale Avenue in South Minneapolis. What was once the edge of the city is now a vibrant and ever-changing urban neighborhood. To many this area is known simply as Uptown (or the edge of Uptown), though more specifically, Salem is near the intersection of Lake Street and Lyndale Avenue and four distinct Minneapolis Neighborhoods: Whittier, Lowry Hill East (Wedge), CARAG, and Lyndale, and is in a nod called Lyn Lake. Salem is physically located in Whittier, though during the years in the wilderness it has lived in CARAG (at Lyndale United Church of Christ’s building at 31st and Aldrich) and also in Lowry Hill East (at the facility of Intermedia Arts at 2822 Lyndale Ave. S.).

This is a highly diverse and creative area with dozens of theaters, artists, coffee shops, locally owned businesses and restaurants, as well as strong residential pockets of families and individuals with wide-ranging backgrounds. Long time residents, students, and new immigrants mix often. The GLBTQ community finds a home in this area of town as well as in this congregation.
